Welcome to this month’s Double Date with Mark and Jill. We are devoting our Double Dates, for the first eight months of this new year, to the God-tools that we talk about in our No More Perfect Marriages book.

The concept of God-tools actually comes from 2 Corinthians 10:3-6 (The Message), “We use our powerful God-tools for smashing warped philosophies, tearing down barriers erected against the truth of God, fitting every loose thought, and emotion, and impulse into the structure of a life shaped by Christ. Our tools are ready at hand for clearing the ground of every obstruction and building lives of obedience into maturity.”

Forgiveness tears down barriers in our hearts. Watch this month’s Double Date to find out what happens when we don’t use our God-Tool of forgiveness!

Talk About It:

Did you see forgiveness in action in your home of origin?

I’m sorry + Will you please forgive me? + I forgive you. = A full apology with closure to the conflict.  Are we characterized by full apologies in our relationship?

Jill said that forgiveness is, “one of the most underused God-tools we have.” Do you feel you underuse it?

Think About It:

Where has a bitter root grown in my heart against my spouse?

Where is my heart tangled up and unavailable to God due to unforgiveness?

Take a few minutes right now and choose forgiveness where you need to.

Notes and Quotes:

2 Corinthians 10:3-6 (MSG) “The tools of our trade aren’t for marketing or manipulation, but they are for demolishing that entire massively corrupt culture. We use our powerful God-tools for smashing warped philosophies, tearing down barriers erected against the truth of God, fitting every loose thought and emotion and impulse into the structure of life shaped by Christ. Our tools are ready at hand for clearing the ground of every obstruction and building lives of obedience into maturity.”

What happens if we don’t use our God-tool of forgiveness?

  • Bitterness-a bitter root in our heart. Unforgiveness is the fertile ground for bitterness, which spreads like a  weed!
  • Exhaustion-physical and mental, rehearsing arguments
  • A hard heart-a wall around our heart
  • Lack of intimacy
  • Lack of closure in conflict

With the God-tool of forgiveness we can move…

From                                                   To

Exhaustion                                        improved health

Emotional pain                                untangled emotions

Hard heart                                        peace

Self-protection                              trusting God

Building walls                                 greater intimacy

Lack of intimacy                           increased intimacy

Lack of closure                             closure and resolution
